I took a wonderful trip to Italy last October with a group of painting friends. We stayed on an island in the Tyrranean Sea near Capri, in a hilltop castle so ancient that it pre-dated Christian times. The first day we arrived, we painted from the castle garden, on an overcast day when the clouds shrouding the dome robed the entire stone structure in shades of brown and beige. The next morning dawned bright and sunny and I painted this piece from the opposite side, with perhaps a hint of exaggerated color.
